International business consultant Stanton DeFreitas can attribute his childhood and youth spent in the Toronto, Ontario, Canada, suburb of Scarborough to his unique perspective on the world. Gaining an immense appreciation for global cultures and diversity, DeFreitas was opened to this unbiased knowledge in his young years along Lake Ontario. There he experienced the area’s rich variation of residents -- multiple religions, many nationalities, several cultures, immense representation among food and language.
Scarborough sits on the east end of Toronto and was established more than 200 years ago from several rural villages, allowing it to begin its growth at that time as a diverse area. It was established as an official borough of Toronto by 1967. With a population in 2011 of just more than 625,000, its citizens are primarily comprised of immigrants and immigrant descendants from the previous four decades. Research for 2006 noted more than 50% of residents claiming to be foreign-born. Cultures range from African, Indian and Chinese to Caribbean -- DeFreitas’ family -- and Chinese. Religions vary vastly as well, including Hindus, Muslims and a near-half population of Christians. This immense diversification aided DeFreitas significantly in his professional pursuits as he strived for a successful career in international business.
